Should You Automate Your Home?

Is home automation worth considering? Should you automate your home? Before you answer that question, you should first understand what “home automation” is and what it entails.

When a home is “automated”, the first thing that most people tend to envision is the home that is run by robots or computers – a home that you see in movies that depict the future. In a way, the depiction of these automated homes is not far from the truth. Homes that are automated are indeed run by computers, but not without human intervention. In other words, humans still hold the controls and command their homes to run in accordance with how they want it to run.

What Does Home Automation Entail?

When you decide to automate your home, you are essentially making it easier for you and your family to control certain tasks with the use of a panel that can be operated anywhere in the house. Tasks like turning on lights, operating heating or cooling systems, opening or locking doors and gates as well as the activation and deactivation of security systems can all be done with the use of a control panel.

Some of these home automation systems can even be operated via the use of a mobile phone. This is particularly helpful when you and your family are away from your home and you wish to secure the premises, make people believe that people are in the house or to simply start the heating or cooling system while you are on your way back. Some of these systems can also be accessed via the internet.

Of course, not everyone can and should control these systems, only authorized users can, which is why a security code or password is required when access to your home automation panel is requested. Even then, each person is given a different access code to help restrict certain functions by being used by children or those who should not be given total access.

What Can Home Automation Give You?

Some people believe that home automation is nothing more than a remote control for simple tasks. They think that all it gives a family is a way to turn lights on and off with the use of a home lighting automation, and to turn heating on and off, with another switch found on the home’s control panel. What they do not realize is that this system actually helps increase the home’s security and the safety of the people who live in it.

If you forget to turn on your sprinklers or you forgot to turn off your heating system, you can do so from afar with the use of your mobile phone or the internet, if you had such a system installed in your home. You can even activate your security cameras and view the footage taken by these from your computer at work or while on vacation. Some of the systems you can choose from include those that are made by Elan, RTI, and Honeywell Security.
